Brief History:
Mission San Fernando Rey de España was founded on Sept. 8, 1797, by Franciscan Friar Fermin Lasuen. The 17th of the California Missions, Mission San Fernando closed the gap between Missions San Buenaventura on the coast and San Gabriel in the interior. Because of its location, Mission San Fernando became a popular stopping off place for those traveling the El Camino Real. The Mission is organized around a large quadrangle, with the Mission Church completing one side. A Convento (the padre’s quarters and a guest house) branches off the quadrangle. The Convento is the largest two-story adobe building in California and has a stunning colonnade with 19 arches. The Convento boasts the largest “grand room” of all 21 Missions and is the only Mission with its original subterranean wine cellar. The grounds feature a new picnic area, new bathrooms, and a vending machine area. Due to its beauty and proximity to Hollywood, the Mission has been the site of numerous films and television shows. Comedian Bob Hope is buried in a beautiful garden park on the north side of the Mission Church.
